What a delight it was to welcome little Sammy back to my Tawa studio for his first birthday cake smash and splash session! It's been very special to photograph him first as a bump in his Mum's tummy, then as a tiny little newborn, and now as a big one year old! Turning one is a big milestone, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a bit of cake, some splashing around, and lots of giggles.
Sammy’s colour theme for the session was a vibrant mix of green, blue, and mustard - to match his newborn session colours. The bright colours really popped in the photos, creating a cheerful backdrop that perfectly matched Sammy’s personality. At first, he was a bit unsure about the whole cake smash idea. After all, when do you usually get to dive into a cake with your hands and make a mess? But as soon as he got his first taste of that sweet, creamy frosting, the magic began. His hesitance quickly turned into curiosity, and with each taste, his smiles grew wider and more frequent!
The cake was demolished in the most adorable way possible, with Sammy’s little hands grabbing fistfuls of icing and cake. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love cake smash sessions so much—there’s nothing quite like the pure, unfiltered joy of a one-year-old experiencing cake in a whole new way!
But the fun didn’t stop there. After the cake had been thoroughly smashed and sampled, it was time for a splash in the bath. We brought out the rubber ducky, and that’s when Sammy’s biggest smiles came out. He had an absolute blast splashing in the warm water, laughing as the rubber ducky bobbed around. The bath was filled with bubbles, and so was the air—bubbles of laughter, that is!
Seeing Sammy’s joy as he played in the water and splashed around was the highlight of the session. There’s something so heartwarming about capturing these moments—watching a little one go from tentative to totally carefree, and knowing that these images will be cherished by his family for years to come.
Sammy’s cake smash and splash session was a beautiful celebration of his first year. It was filled with laughter, mess, and most importantly, love. I feel so privileged to have been a part of his special day, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.
